Description: Cleveland Museum of Art viewed from University Circle. The Cleveland Museum of Art is located at 11150 East Boulevard in Cleveland, Ohio and is on the north side of Wade Lagoon. The museum was founded in 1913 and opened on June 6, 1916. The art museum was funded by Cleveland industrialists Hinman B. Hurlbut, John Huntington, and Horace Kelley. The Wade Park property was donated for the museum site by Jeptha H. Wade II. The Cleveland firm of Hubbell & Benes designed the neoclassic building which was constructed of white Georgian marble. The cost of of the building was $1.25 million. University Circle is bounded by Wade Park Ave. on the north; E. 105th on the west; and the RTA tracks on the east and south sides. The circle occupies 488 acres. It was in 1799 that the land was first settled with the establishment of Nathaniel Doan's tavern at what is now E. 107th St. and Euclid Ave., but was then called Doan's Corners. University Circle began to take shape in the 1880s when Western Reserve University moved its campus from Hudson, OH, to Euclid Ave. in 1883. Case School of Applied Science moved from downtown Cleveland to a location adjacent to WRU in 1885 (eventually to be federated with its neighbor in 1967 as Case Western Reserve University.). In the same decade, Jeptha H. Wade donated to the City of Cleveland a large piece of land that adjoined the WRU campus, stipulating that the land be used as a public park with an art gallery. The name of the area was taken from a streetcar stop on a line running on Euclid to a turnaround at E. 107th known as University Circle. View on Ohio Memory.

The bridge pictured in the photograph is the Main Avenue Bridge. The Main Ave. (Harold H. Burton Memorial) Bridge, in its current state, opened October 6, 1939. The 6 lane bridge is Ohio's longest elevated structure at 8,000ft. Description: In 1928 Cleveland voters approved a $2.5 million bond for the construction of Cleveland Municipal Stadium; widely believed to have been part of an attempt to secure the 1932 Olympics, however Los Angeles was chosen as the host in 1923. The Stadium was the largest of its kind at the time, seating over 78,000 people. Together with the Mall and Public Square, the Stadium hosted the 1936 great Lakes Exposition. From 1947 to 1994 it housed the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. Municipal Stadium was demolished in 1996 to erect the present Cleveland Browns Stadium. Conceived in the 1903 Group Plan as a civic center in the City Beautiful style, a long park flanked by neoclassical government buildings, the Mall was to have been capped at its north end by the Union Terminal train station. The station's intended location shifted south and west; a rail approach from the southeast, along Ontario Avenue, was excavated and bridged in 1929. Description: A photograph of a modern day Lake Steamer and the Byrd Sailing Ship (City of New York) at the 9th Street docks in Cleveland, Ohio. The City of New York was the ship Admiral Richard E Byrd outfitted for his famous polar exploration. The City of New York later became a museum of polar exploration, touring the Atlantic Coast and the Great Lakes. She ended up in Cleveland, where she was trapped by a newly constructed bridge. She remained there until World War II. To help meet the great need for additional shipping during the was, her masts were taken down and she left the Great Lakes for service on the east coast. Description: Dated ca. 1930-1939, this photograph shows the Index of American Design artists at work, Mike DaDante, Carol Larson, and Angelo Bulone. The Index was part of the Federal Arts Project. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.
